What is suede leather? Definition and bag buying guide

What is suede leather? Definition and bag buying guide

By  ·

Suede is leather with a napped surface. Latico Leathers uses Leather Naturally's leather terminology guide here to explain the term. The guide defines suede as the flesh side of finished leather, or as split leather. Its surface fibers tend to be longer, giving it the fuzzy appearance associated with suede.

What does the word suede tell you?

The definition describes the material and its surface. When you read a bag listing, look for the details that apply to that item. Does the suede description cover the exterior, a trim panel or another part of the bag? Ask the seller if the listing does not make that clear.

If you want a closer look at the surface, examine the bag in person when possible. Otherwise, request close-up photographs. For questions about how it feels, ask the seller to describe that particular bag.

Choosing a suede bag

Start with what you plan to carry. Compare the listed measurements with your belongings and check whether they describe the exterior or the usable interior. If you need room for a particular device, ask about its fit.

Look for photographs of the inside, including the pockets and closure. Think about where you would put your keys and how you would reach your phone. Request another photograph if an important detail is missing.

Check the strap measurements against a bag you already use, especially if you want to wear it over a coat. Ask for the item's weight if that matters to you. Compare colors with the clothes you wear most often.

Latico Leathers has been family-run since 1984. Browse the Latico Leathers suede collection and read the individual descriptions for the shape and interior you want.

Which care instructions should you follow?

Ask for the maker's care instructions for the exact bag before choosing a cleaner, brush or protective treatment. If you plan to use it on a rainy commute, ask whether the maker recommends it for that use.

For an existing stain or tear, you can ask an independent specialist to assess it. Latico Leathers does not offer cleaning, re-dyeing, refurbishing or repair services. Ask what result the specialist can reasonably offer before agreeing to the work.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • Which parts of the bag are suede?
  • Will the usable interior fit what I carry?
  • Do the strap measurements suit how I want to wear it?
  • What care instructions does the maker provide for this item?

If a missing detail would change your decision, ask about it before you order.
