What is PU leather? Composition, comparisons and care

By . .

PU leather usually means a fabric backing with a polyurethane coating made to resemble leather. PU is short for polyurethane, a plastic. At Latico Leathers, we work with full-grain leather, so we want the difference between these materials to be clear before you choose a bag.

Before buying, check what the surface and backing are made from. If a listing only names the coating, ask the seller to fill in the rest.

What is PU leather made of?

In a common PU faux-leather construction, polyurethane forms the surface over a textile backing. The coating creates the leather-like exterior, while the fabric forms the base. This guide describes that common construction.

Adams Plastics describes synthetic leather as a fabric base coated with a polymer, usually PU or PVC.

Ask about the whole product

If a listing uses another term, such as bicast, ask the seller to explain its composition. Request the surface and backing materials in writing before comparing bags.

If avoiding animal-derived materials is part of your decision, ask the seller to confirm the composition of the complete product, including its backing and trim. Do not use the letters PU as a substitute for that confirmation.

Questions to ask when comparing materials

PU and full-grain leather

Fabric-backed PU is a coated textile. When comparing it with a full-grain leather bag, ask for the material details of each item, along with evidence behind any durability claim.

Latico Leathers makes full-grain leather bags. If that is the material you are looking for, our leather crossbody collection gives you a place to compare everyday bag shapes. Read each bag's details for its construction and fit rather than relying on a general material comparison to answer everything.

PU and faux leather

PU and PVC are common types of faux leather. If a listing says only "faux leather," ask which material it uses.

PU and PVC

PU and PVC are used as coatings over fabric in common synthetic-leather constructions. Ask about the material's intended use and its care instructions rather than assuming the coating name settles comfort or performance.

PU and bonded leather

If you are comparing a product described as bonded leather, request its complete composition. Ask what each layer contains and whether the seller can supply a material breakdown.

Compare the actual bags

Use photographs to compare the look you want. Confirm the material with the seller rather than making a composition judgment from the image alone.

If a seller cites material testing, check whether it applies to handbags and how it relates to the bag you want.

Compare the prices of the bags you are considering alongside their construction and care requirements. Use those listings to decide what fits your budget.

How long does PU leather last?

We do not give PU leather a fixed lifespan or promise a particular number of years for a Latico bag. If longevity is central to your purchase, look for product-specific testing or warranty terms.

Polyurethane can break down through hydrolysis, which breaks polymer chains. The Anderson Development technical paper examines this mechanism in polyurethane elastomers. Those tests do not predict how long a particular handbag will last.

What about environmental impact?

PU-coated faux leather can shed microplastics. A review in Langmuir describes particle release from PU-coated polyester fabric under UV ageing. That evidence does not give an emissions figure for a particular handbag.

That evidence does not establish that every leather bag has a lower overall environmental impact than every PU bag. For an environmental comparison, ask for evidence tied to the specific products and the claim being made.

How should you care for PU leather?

Start with the manufacturer's care instructions for the exact item. Ask which cleaning products and methods it approves. If there are no instructions, request them before trying a treatment intended for a different material.

Ask the manufacturer about water exposure and storage conditions too. Check whether it makes a waterproof claim for your item, and follow its guidance rather than a care routine for another material.

Common questions about PU leather

Is PU leather the same as animal hide?

The common fabric-backed PU construction described here is polyurethane-coated textile. If avoiding animal-derived materials matters to you, ask for confirmation about the complete item, including its backing and trim.

Can you identify PU leather by its grain pattern?

Use the seller's material disclosure to confirm composition. Do not treat a visible pattern as your only evidence about what the bag contains.

Will PU leather peel?

The technical paper cited above describes hydrolysis in polyurethane elastomers. It does not tell us whether or when the surface of a particular bag will peel. Ask the seller for evidence about its material and intended use.

Is PU leather right for an everyday bag?

Read the bag's material disclosure and care instructions, then check its construction against how you plan to use it. Ask the seller to explain any missing details before you order.
