How to choose a tote bag for work
By Ben Schreiber. Updated .
Choose a work tote around the items you carry, how securely you need it to close and how you reach the things you use on your commute. Latico Leathers' Lindsey is a full-grain leather example with a key leash and dedicated interior storage. Check the opening and strap against the load you take to work.
Start with a normal workday
Lay out what goes with you on a routine office day. Include your device in its sleeve, charger, water bottle and anything you bring home. A bag that accommodates a bare laptop might be awkward once its sleeve and charger come along.
Keep occasional travel separate from the daily requirement. Buying around an unusually heavy day can leave you carrying more bag than you need every morning. If you regularly need a second bag for lunch or gym clothes, decide whether combining the loads will help or make shoulder carry uncomfortable.
Check the opening and closure
Look for the closure in the product details and photographs. A zip and a magnetic closure offer different access, and a bag without a complete top closure may be a poor match for a crowded train. Choose around your commute rather than assuming every tote closes the same way.
An interior zip pocket protects a smaller compartment. It does not establish that the main bag zips shut. Lindsey's current description names an interior zip pocket but does not clearly specify the main closure. Ask for that detail before choosing it for a commute that requires a closed top.
Give frequently used items a home
The Lindsey tote has a key leash, interior elastic water bottle holders and storage for cards and lipstick, according to its current product description. Those details make it a relevant starting point if loose small items tend to collect at the bottom of your work bag.
Think about access while carrying it. Will you be able to reach a travel card without taking the bag off? Can the bottle stay separate from papers? A removable pouch can help with small items, but it also takes up space. Judge the interior with your own carry list.
Treat published dimensions as exterior measurements
Lindsey's published dimensions are 13 inches high, 3.5 inches deep and 19 inches long. These are exterior measurements, not a guarantee of usable interior space or the width of the opening.
Measure your device inside its sleeve. Ask about the opening and any dedicated device compartment before relying on a fit claim. A laptop's advertised screen size is a diagonal measurement, so it cannot be compared directly with a bag's length. If fit is uncertain, request confirmation for your exact device and sleeve.
Check shoulder carry with a coat
Lindsey lists a shoulder strap width of 2 inches and a 10-inch drop. Strap drop helps you judge the space between your shoulder and the bag, but it does not prove comfort under your usual load. Compare it with a bag you already carry comfortably, including the coat you wear to work.
If possible, try a prospective tote with your normal contents. Notice whether you can reach inside, whether the strap stays where you want it and whether you would prefer to carry the load across your body.
Choose between a tote and a crossbody for the office
A tote is worth considering when your workday includes wider items or papers you want to keep together. A crossbody may suit a lighter carry list and a commute where you want your hands free. Neither label proves capacity or comfort. Check the actual opening, strap and interior of the bag you are considering.
For daily use, inspect stitching, strap attachments and closure operation. Read the warranty terms before buying. The word durable in a description is not a tested load rating or a promise about years of use.
Common work-tote questions
Does a professional work bag need compartments?
It needs a layout that suits your routine. Built-in pockets help if you carry loose small items. An open interior with a pouch may suit someone who moves essentials between bags.
Can a work tote replace a laptop bag?
Only after you confirm fit, access and the protection your device requires. Exterior dimensions alone do not establish those things.
Is a top zip essential?
It depends on your commute and what you carry. If a closed main compartment matters, confirm the main closure explicitly rather than treating an interior zip pocket as evidence.
Where should the selection start?
Start with your ordinary carry list, then check the opening and shoulder fit. Compare the product details with those requirements before deciding.
